When it comes to working on our health and wellness, we sometimes feel like it’s going to be overwhelming, take a lot of time in our day, and cost a lot of money. We see the fitness gurus on instagram that promise results, but it often comes at a steep price tag, both physically and monetarily.

As a widow, my wellness has always been important, but I didn’t realize that what I was doing was actually stressing my body, not helping it. I burned the candle at both ends and pushed too hard in my workout. I thought I needed to exercise longer, to run faster and to get up earlier to be healthy.  But I have learned that wellness doesn’t mean working harder. Nor does it mean spending a lot of time or money. There are simple things you can include in your everyday life that will boost your health, are gentle to your body and mind, and are completely free.

Here are my top Five FREE ways to boost your wellness that you can seamlessly incorporate into your daily routine.

1. Drink water
I know, I know, you’ve probably heard this a lot, but it’s so important! Most of us don’t drink nearly enough water and are unaware that we are continually dehydrated. Ideally you should be getting half your body weight in ounces of water per day. That’s a lot of water! I can hear you asking, “But how do you drink enough water without being up all night to use the bathroom?”

My solution is to get most of my ounces in before lunch. Here’s how I do it:

  • As soon as I get up in the morning, I drink 2 big glasses of water.
  • After my morning walk, I drink another big glass, and that’s all before breakfast!
  • Then between breakfast and lunch, I continue to drink one or two more glasses.
It then becomes doable to not only drink most of my water before lunch, but to get enough water in a day.

Now, just because you’re drinking water, doesn’t mean you’re hydrated. The water we drink today is generally devoid of essential minerals, which are what keeps us hydrated. If you find water is just going right through, try adding a pinch of good quality sea salt to each glass of water (here's the sea salt I use). Sea salt is full of minerals that your body needs, and water follows salt. So instead of running right through your system, your body will be well hydrated, and you won’t be making as many trips to the bathroom.

Important note: if you drink coffee, you should be adding additional water because coffee is a dehydrant. Your body loses water when you drink coffee, which means you then have to replace it. I gave up coffee many years ago for a variety of reasons, many of them health related, and only have the occasional cup. Anticipate how much coffee you’re going to drink and add that much more water into your day. Your body will thank you!
