We recently got back from a trip to Ohio to take both of our kids to Cedarville University for the start of their senior and sophomore years. Cedarville University is my alma mater, and I am thrilled that both of my kids are attending there this year. My son had planned to attend last year, but he had an unexpected illness that came up, and we had to pivot at the last minute (more on that in a future post). So he transferred in this year as a sophomore after doing his freshman year online through Liberty University. We are so thankful he is healthy and strong and ready for this next step.
Since this is the fourth year we’ve taken a kid to college, it’s safe to say we’re experienced at this. I want to share some of the things that have helped them and us get ready for the transition to college, things students should know before going, and some other tips.
1. Make a List
This might seem obvious, but make a list on your phone of things your student will need. Look at suggestions on the college’s website, search pinterest for college necessities, and check out my blog post on Essential College Packing Tips: Uncommon Must-Haves for College Students.
I was SO glad I made a list when my daughter was headed into her freshman year. It kept us on track, and instead of panicking about what she needed when she got there, we already had most of it and could fill in the rest from the list. And since I kept the list, it made it much easier to get my son ready for college.
2. Plan for Housing
If you have a significant trip, like we do (nearly 900 miles each way), plan ahead for housing. Hotels.com is a great place to view hotels in the area you want as well as look at ratings and reviews. Airbnb is also a great way to find housing. Look for super hosts, as they have the best ratings, and watch out for high cleaning fees.
Both of my kids and I have food sensitivities, so we plan ahead for food. I bring most of our food with us (when we drive), which eliminates the need to search for a place we could all eat. If we do need a place to eat, I plan our hotels around places I know we can eat. Chipotle is always a winner for us!!
Part 2 and the rest of the tips are coming next week.
Also, don’t forget about the GIVEAWAY!!! Giveaway ends Friday, September 13th at 11:59 pm - that’s in one week!!
