After 17 Years of Widowhood, Here's What I Know for SureLessons From a Life Rebuilt After Loss
When Jon died, I couldn't imagine what my life would look like seventeen years later.
Honestly, I was just trying to make it through the next day.
The next week.
The next month.
Thinking years into the future felt impossible.
But now, with nearly seventeen years between me and that devastating loss, there are a few things I know for sure.
First, grief changes.
It doesn't disappear.
It doesn't end.
But it changes.
The crushing weight of the early days eventually becomes easier to carry.
The sharp edges soften.
The tears become less frequent.
The love remains.
Second, healing is possible. There was a time when I couldn't imagine feeling normal again.
A time when anxiety, exhaustion, and grief felt like permanent residents in my life.
But God slowly brought healing.
Not all at once.
Not according to my timeline.
But faithfully.
Little by little.
Third, joy returns.
This is something newly widowed people often struggle to believe.
I know I did.
It can feel almost impossible to imagine laughing again, dreaming again, or genuinely enjoying life again.
But joy does return.
Not because the loss becomes insignificant.
But because God gently teaches us how to live again.

Psalm 30:5 says, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning."
For me, that morning didn't arrive overnight.
It came slowly.
Over years.
Over thousands of ordinary days.
But it came.
Fourth, God is faithful.
When I look back over the years, I can see His provision everywhere.
In the people He brought into my life.
In the financial provision that allowed me to stay home with my children.
In the friendships He provided.
In the opportunities He opened.
In the healing He brought.
I can see His hand in places I never noticed at the time.
And finally, I know that life can be beautiful again.Different.
But beautiful.
The life I have today is not the life I planned.
I would never have chosen this path.
I would never have chosen to lose Jon.
But God has given me blessings I never could have imagined in the middle of that heartbreak.
A wonderful husband.
Adult children I am incredibly proud of.
A ministry that allows me to encourage other widows.
A deeper faith than I had before.
The story God writes is rarely the story we would write for ourselves.
But I have learned that He is trustworthy.
Even in grief.
Even in uncertainty.
Even when we cannot see what He is doing.
If you're in the early days of loss, I want you to know there is hope.
Not because the journey is easy.
But because God is faithful.
And if He carried me through seventeen years of widowhood, I believe He will carry you too.
